This was an interesting season to decide the Rookie of the Year award. Emeka Okafor was a monster, but played in relative obscurity and missed several games on the IL. Dwight Howard has been great all year and is really turning it on down the stretch while playing on a team fighting for the playoffs. And Ben Gordon has been the best 6th man in the league on the surprise team in the East.
I've been leaning toward Gordon on the strength of his league-leading 19 double-figure fourth quarter performances, but was undecided. Until tonight. My man went for 35 points on 11-17 shooting (6-8 from three) in ONLY 23 minutes. That's crazy.
Anyway, he's been the man in crunch time for a team that has a good chance at grabbing home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. He's one of the best scorers in the league. He is the new frontrunner for 6th Man of the Year.
Which makes him my Rookie of the Year.

I'm suprised the LeBron and Carmelo aren't up for ROY honors again. I'm still reeling from the PR blitz the NBA put on last year for those two. Geez.
Dude, I completely agree about Ben Gordon for ROY. I've never heard of anyone being a 4th quarter specialist, but he is doing it. He puts up big numbers in limited minutes, even now when everyone knows what is going to happen when he gets in the game. Plus, the Bulls are playing for home court??? This is a great example of a team turning it around in the middle of the season. They were 5-17 (5-17!!!) before it came together in December.
In regards to Okeafor, I don't think he should be completely written off. even though he was injured, he is still averaging a double-dub and the Bobcats have been muc more competative than an expansion team should be. Ups to Bernie Bickerstaff, Nelly and the entire crew down in Charlotte.
This has to help UConn's recruiting effort. The two top NBA rookies coming out of the same program. Too bad they lost the NCAA championship to LeBron.
Gordon definitely sealed 6th Man of the year last night with that game-winner against the Knicks, locking up home court advantage. Rookie of the Year will come down to whether or not the voters go for: biggest contribution to winning (Gordon), best stats (Okafor), or the best blend of the two (Howard). I'm still voting for Gordon.
By the way, how angry do the Sixers have to be with the Bulls for playing the Pargo All-Stars down the stretch against Indiana tonight? If Chicago plays their main guys, they win and the Pacers drop the seventh season. All of which would have meant that Philly would have been shredding Boston in round one. Instead, they will get the defending champs. Ouch. Skiles and Doc Rivers are not loved tonight in Philly or Cleveland, respectively.
